When I was in Maine last month I stopped counting how many people made eye contact and smiled at me.  They looked genuinely happy for me.  I guess people who know how to endure a long, hard winter admire spunk/grit/unyielding courage.  I was enjoying the sunny 75 degree (F) weather and their beautiful state.  Sharing that pleasure with strangers made it even nicer.  People back home ignore me.  I live in a congested area where people just want bodies to quickly get out of their way. 

The one place where I've had an uncomfortable experience with strangers is Princeton, New Jersey where Princeton University is located.  At least half a dozen people have stared at me with horror like I was a bad traffic accident they could not take their eyes off of.  The first couple of times I was surprised.  The next few times I got angry.  Then I started thinking about saying something something nasty that would probably make the situation worse.  The next time this happens I'm thinking about walking over to them and asking them why they look upset.  Knowing that I can talk might make them stop staring and start a conversation. 

Some able-bodied people need help to see people as more than ONLY being disabled.  The baby boom generation is twice as large as our parents generation so there is going to be a lot more people with strokes.  750,000 Americans have strokes each year so that number has the potential to double.  Will the way strangers react to the disabled get better or worse?
