The Info I Can't Believe I'm Garderning Again | Health News

I was never interested in plants when I was a child.  When my mother talked to her plants I used to laugh at her.  Then I decided to plant a vegetable garden when I was in my twenties.  I discovered the joy of looking through seed catalogues and the magic of watching plants push up through the earth.  Pulling weeds in my garden in the cool of the evening turned out to be relaxing.  I'm glad I found a way to garden after my stroke.  Here is how I do raised gardening.

I use a big pot that won't dry out if I forget to water it every day.  A friend puts the pot on a bench that sits next to the chair I use to watch the sunset as I drink a cup coffee.  I used to traumatize each plant when I pulled it out of its container one-handed.  I learned an easier method by accident.  Now a few days before I begin I make sure the plants dry out a little.  The roots release more easily if the soil is dry.  These impatiens grow into a big rounded ball of flowers that I get to admire every time I come home.

After I fill the pot with soil I put a plastic ring on top of the dirt.  The ring keeps plants away from the rim and gives me something to lean the 1st row of plants against.  I made this ring out of an old disposable cutting board. Watering the pot is a good way to press the soil down so the roots make good contact with the soil.  Air pockets are not good for plant roots.
I use my hemiplegic hand to hold the watering can still so it won't tip over as I fill it with the hose.  I spill more dirt when working with one hand, but I have ways to make the mess disappear.  I use a soft brush to sweep surfaces clean.  I use the garden hose with the spray nozzle set on jet spray to wash dirt off my concrete patio.  I don't mind the mess.  I love feeling the earth with my fingers.  Once again I learned that all anti-depressants don't come in a pill.
