Grace's video of putting away the silverware evoked so many emotions that I had to write a post.
Jealousy. Unlike Grace, my hemiplegic hand can't pick up objects and place them where I want them. The smallest object my hemiplegic hand can hold onto is a tube of toothpaste. It will never hold a utensil.
Empathy. I didn't have to look at Grace's face to see if she was frustrated. I could feel it in my gut. We both have weak shoulder muscles that make our arms bob around like we're searching for apples in a tub of water while blindfolded. Knowing this doesn't make the frustration easier to tolerate. Yet I couldn't stop watching Grace's video because her persistence is mesmerizing.
Pride. I'm proud to be part of the generation of stroke survivors that is proving neuroscience was wrong. I grind my teeth every time a therapist or doctor says recovery is limited to 6 months after a stroke. Numerous studies have shown that recovery can continue for years if stroke survivors challenge their brains. Grace puts away the silverware more slowly than her husband or children, but she is growing new neurons while she gives them a more carefree life. They probably don't know that some families constantly wait on stroke survivors until everyone is exhausted and the stroke survivor's brain literally shrinks from disuse.
Gratitude. I'm glad the Internet keeps me in touch with other stroke survivors. So much recovery happens after formal rehab ends. Blogging with stroke survivors provides inspiration and suggestions without adding an out-of-pocket expense. Other stroke survivors' posts make me think about the choices I make and pay attention to how I feel.
