Doing 80 repetitions with
the Releas splint made my hand tighter. I do not know if this would have happened if I had not stopped using the SaeboFlex splint for four months after I broke my forearm. SaeboFlex exercises are the only thing that reduce the flexor tone in my hand for 24 hours. Now I use the dynamic Releas splint during ADLs with thin objects, like inserting a return slip and check in an envelope and hanging shirts on hangers. After I close my hand the short piece of fishing rod in the Releas splint helps me let go. My hand was flaccid for three months after my stroke so the photo on the right feels like a small miracle.
Folding laundry one-handed is aggravating and takes forever. When I straighten one section of a garment I drag another section out of place. The photo shows my hands just before I lift my right
hemiplegic (paralyzed) thumb so my sound hand can put the two halves of the fabric together. When the two halves touch I press down with my hemiplegic thumb to hold them together. After I pinch I need help from the Releas to let go.
Using the Releas splint during ADL activities taught me I need to do more than think about exercising when I use my SaeboFlex splint. I have modified my SaeboFlex exercises to simulate the movement I am struggling with since I broke my forearm.
I set out a bottle of soy sauce to remind me that SaeboFlex exercises need to prepare me for a specific step in ADL tasks. The photo shows a small sample of the 100+ objects I need to reach for with my forearm in neutral and hold still while my sound hand manipulates the object. When the forearm is in
neutral it is half way between palm up and palm down. I am still struggling to keep my forearm in neutral after the I pick up a ball, transfer it to my hemiplegic hand, and let the SaeboFlex splint help me drop the ball in a crate. The Release splint taught me to picture transferring this SaeboFlex exercise to something I want to do.
