The Info Tug-of-war Can Send You to a Nursing Home | Health News

Watching a video of a caregiver transferring a stroke survivor broke my heart.  When the stroke survivor was sitting in the bed she pushed her head behind vertical as her daughter was pulling her forward to get her out of bed.  During a toilet transfer I saw the mother push her head behind vertical while her daughter was trying to keep her from falling backwards as the mother sat down.  This tug-of-war made the stroke survivor plop down on the toilet seat.

Therapists never allow clients to push in one direction while the therapist pulls in another direction. After spending thousands of dollars on a college education therapists expect to practice for 40 years.  Therapists are the safety police because they can't afford to be injured or have a client injured on their watch.

When I worked in home health I gave up trying to get some people to do a proper transfer.
I wasn't able to get some caregivers to understand that letting a stroke survivor do whatever they want during a transfer puts themselves and their loved one in danger.  Perhaps I should have tried tough love by saying "if you don't stop playing tug-of-war you will damage your back and your mother will end up in a nursing home where the staff will rarely get her out of bed because she is so difficult to transfer."

Caregivers aren't the only ones who are in denial about how much stress their body can take.
I have two friends who have a bad knee.  They would rather lurch from side-to-side as they walk than draw attention to themselves by using a cane.  If my friends saw a video of themselves they would know they aren't fooling anyone.  Everyone can see they are hobbling along.  Now they have back problems in addition to a bad knee.

Staying physically active is a marathon people can't win unless they use good body mechanics.
